Sapphire Woods

Advocate and Researcher

Sapphire Woods is a Black trans, gender-nonconforming, community-based researcher, archive enthusiast, and trans advocate. Their work in research and education investigates, collects, and builds accessible resources and curricula to share information about trans and gender-diverse stories – particularly around Black African and diasporic histories acknowledging gender-expansiveness and ways of being in the future. Sapphire believes that ahead of the rapidly changing sociopolitical landscape, particularly affecting socially and ethnically marginalized members of society, research can inform the everyday and political ways we can continue to care for and protect our trans and gender-diverse community members and loved ones, especially gender-diverse children and youth.

Sapphire has worked as a consultant for a trans health organization and continues to work in collaboration with universities and non-profits across Canada.
